November 28, 2016, I walked into a government office and I saw two photos on a cubicle wall. The two boys were fishing. I asked the public servant if the kids were in middle school yet.
"The older one is in 4th grade and the younger one is in 3rd grade," replied the dad.
"There is still time to make school fun for them," I said. "Schools are built for girls. Soon 65 percent of students in college will be female. Two out of three students will be women. Fortunately, there are schools and philosophies built to help students get through school or, better, prepare to show their sills using digital portfolios or free websites."
"Oh?" the dad's eyebrows went up. "I was an A student until I got to middle school. then I dropped. I was lucky to climb ou of the hole by the time I got to senior year."
"I have some websites for you. You look like a reader."
"I can usually keep attention on a page," the dad admitted.
"Then I have some reading for you. I'm adapting this book for middle schoolers, too. I have a page that you can read together. Then you talk about what was read."
